There’s a saying that claims that we can get our lessons from anyone, even children, and this is true. But it wouldn’t be a surprise to us if there would be a quote in the near future that says we can learn life lessons from our dogs. Because our dogs not only give us unconditional love, but they also teach us how to overcome difficulties in life.
Take Piglet’s case, for example. This pink little doggo was born as a double dapple dachshund. This means that his parents were both dapple dogs. Being a double dapple pooch meant a 25% chance of him becoming deaf or blind. Unfortunately, Piglet is both.
Despite his misfortunes, there is a small sliver of luck on his side, as he was rescued by Melissa Shapiro, a vet from Connecticut who’s got a soft spot for abused pups. Piglet is one of them. He was actually rescued from a hoarding situation. The pink pooch was then entered into Shapiro’s foster program.
It was quite challenging to train a dog like Piglet because he couldn’t see and hear. On top of these, he had anxiety attacks. Piglet would scream and panic during the first few weeks under the care of Shapiro. But with the help of treats and a lot of love, this little pink pup started to open up.
Perhaps he understood that despite not seeing and hearing Shapiro, he had a human who cared for him. So much so that after Piglet had completed his training and regained his health, the vet couldn’t let her go. Shapiro adopted the pooch and used her story to inspire others.
She wrote a book about Piglet’s life to inspire children and adults, too, that even if grave misfortunes come their way, they should never give up on life. Shapiro also started to sell Piglet merchandise, and 100% of the proceeds are donated to rescue groups that focus on disabled dogs.
