Nikki Carvey was the founder of Road Dogs and Rescue. She got a call about a five-legged bulldog puppy needed special attention. Nikki knew it would be a challenge but was ready to welcome the little puppy.
Extra love
Nikki had experienced a lot of dogs with special needs. Even so, she met Ellery and was surprised by the dog’s extra leg.
The puppy’s past owners said that the dog wouldn’t make it past the first few hours. Nikki was persistent despite knowing that it was a lot more work than a typical puppy.
There were a lot of things to keep in mind when taking care of Ellery. Nikki wondered if the leg would affect the puppy once he grew up.
Trying to feed Ellery was a whole other situation. It was tricky to get him to ingest formula. A typical puppy would just suck out of a bottle, but Ellery took a lot more coaxing. Nikki saw that the puppy was trying.
All of Ellery’s milestones were delayed. It took him about three weeks before his eyes opened, which was unusual.
When the puppy was finally able to walk, the extra leg just dragged behind him. As he grew taller, the leg would be off the floor.
The transformation
A couple of months after, Ellery wanted to be the king of the rescue. He took on the big dogs but remained his sweet and loving self.
A lot of puppies come and go to the rescue, and Ellery loved everyone he met. He was the one that helped Nikki raise them all.
Despite a lot of people wanting to adopt Ellery, Nikki was very picky because of the dog’s special needs. She tried to find the perfect family that would understand Ellery.
Ellery had his extra leg surgically removed because it was rubbing on his other legs. Even so, the dog was perfectly healthy.
Nikki was so proud of how far Ellery had come. She hopes that the dog may find his forever home soon.
