Dogs can bring joy to anyone who cares enough about them. Even if a person does not own a dog, just the sight of them running around happily in a park can brighten their day immensely. For a 13-year-old boy, watching doggies enjoy a sunny day at the nearby dog park was all that got him through his sessions for chemotherapy.
Doggies in the window
Johnny Martin was diagnosed with soft cell cancer when he was a little boy and spent the majority of his time at the Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago for chemotherapy sessions and other treatments. Whenever he was strong enough to stand up, he would go straight to his favorite window that looked out to the nearby dog park. This is where he daydreamed about having a dog himself.
This little boy didn’t want just any dog to call his own; he wanted a Corgi. Johnny became so into the idea of having a pet that it was all he could talk about. The young teenager would even spend his chemo sessions researching all there is to know about Corgis and how to take care of them.
Wish come true
The staff at Lurie’s Hospital reached out to the Little Wish Foundation on behalf of Johnny, who was about to undergo very intensive surgery to remove the many tumors he had growing. This is an organization Liz Niemiec founded that helps grant wishes for children living with serious diseases.
The foundation was so touched about the boy’s simple wish that they decided to grant it for Johnny. They gave him the Corgi that he has always wanted after his surgery, and the boy was ecstatic. The presence of the little dog in Johnny’s life made what he is going through easier to bear. He is now a delighted dog-owner who is currently cancer-free.
