The Gwinnett Jail Dogs Program of Lawrenceville, Georgia, pairs homeless dogs with select inmates so that both can benefit. One dog, named Bandit, had been with the program for a very long time. Bandit had been adopted and then returned four times, and Bandit’s odds weren’t looking good.
Bandit is a disabled dog, confined to a wheelchair. Although he is a very sweet and affectionate dog, his disability requires a lot of special care. Many families have been scared to adopt the friendly dog, leaving him to spend his days in a shelter, and with the Gwinnett Jail Dogs.
Recently, a couple saw Bandit on a Facebook post and knew he was the right dog for their family. Darrell and Sue Rider said Bandit is the perfect fit because Darrell is also in a wheelchair. Darrell said he was intrigued when he learned Bandit shared the same type of paralysis as he did. Both Darrell and Sue were up for the challenge since they understand what life is like in a wheelchair.
Darrell and Sue then contacted Gwinnett Jail Dogs to learn more about Bandit. After a month of discussions, the couple was ready to meet the dog for the first time. Darrell was happy to see that Bandit was a lot like him, and they knew Bandit would be happy in their home. Any doubt, the couple had disappeared during that first meeting.
Sue and Darrell worked with Bandit’s handlers and veterinarians to ensure their home was ready for the disabled dog. Everyone at the Gwinnett Jail Dogs was sad to see Bandit go, but excited for the dog to finally have a loving family. Lori Cronin, a volunteer with Gwinnett Jail Dogs, said it’s strange not to see Bandit in his unit and come up for a treat. The staff misses his scratchy bark and sweet personality.
Bandit has settled into life with Darrell and Sue very well. The sweet dog is finally understood, and his new owners are very happy to have him.
